Elgin Golf Club Hole 18 - Gordon Wilken

Hole 18 – Gordon Wilken

The eighteenth hole at Elgin, a tough finishing hole, is named after Gordon Wilken, who served the club as Secretary from 1959 until his sudden and untimely passing in early 1980 at the age of 65.

From the tee the drive is over rough ground to a slightly downhill open fairway. The plateau green, which is set at an angle with a steep bank running away to the right, is overlooked by the Clubhouse.

There are grassy hollows and a bunker to the left and other bunkers at either side of the fairway short of the green, plus a dip in front, all of which makes the second shot a difficult proposition. Most players will be content to pitch on in three.

This hole is a fitting climax and the setting provides an ideal vantage point for spectators to cast their critical gaze on the players.
