Elgin Golf Club was formed in 1906 and started as a 9 hole course, The first meeting setting up the Club took place in February 1906 and the course was ready for play on Wednesday 8th May 1907.
The first head greenkeeper was John McPherson, he was appointed on 1st March 1907 and served continuously until his sudden death in 1951. During that period Mr McPherson devoted his whole life to maintaining the course. He was a wonderful greenkeeper and the course is a fitting memorial to his efforts over the 44 years he was employed.
The first captain of the club was the Chief Constable of the County, John B Mair, and he has been succeeded over the years by many well known local personalities. In 1911 the club formed a Ladies Section and almost from the beginning the ladies have had equal rights with their male counterparts.
The first Clubhouse was erected and fitted out at the grand cost of £390 in 1909, this should he compared with the current clubhouse refurbishment which took place in 1994/95 and cost £550,000! The course was extended to 18 holes in 1924 and golf at this time was so popular the membership rose to 711. Further indication of the popularity at this time was the fact that a bus service ran from town to the course for members' convenience.
In 1950 the club managed to purchase the redundant smallpox hospital at a cost of £1950 and this building forms the heart of the present clubhouse.
Sunday golf was a very touchy item. This was first discussed in June 1920 and rejected. On 14th April 1930 a special meeting was called to discuss this matter and 288 members attended. The secretary was asked to have a police presence at that meeting and after a very passionate meeting the move was rejected by a majority of 54. It was not until 9th October 1946 that the matter of Sunday golf was approved and at the same meeting it was agreed to ask for a liquor license.
The first club professional was appointed in 1934 and the longest serving by far is Ian Rodger who was in post for 27 years, retiring in March 2001. The current professional is Kevin Stables and he suceeded Ian in post. Kevin began his golfing at Elgin as a Junior before turning professional and he has been very successful. He has played in the European Tour and was Captain of the Scottish PGA two years running in the early 1990's. He currently holds the Professional Record for Elgin, a score of 63, which he achieved in our annual Pro-Am in 1996.
The Club has had many secretaries but none more well known or revered as Gordon Wilken who served the club well from 1959 to 1979. He devoted his time over all that period for the good of the club. The first hole is named after John McPherson the first greenkeeper and the 18th is named after Gordon. The like of either of these gentlemen will never be seen again.
At the 25th anniversary dinner of the club a toast was made "It is a club backed by keen golfers and stable government, resulting in a course charming for its setting and excellent in its layout so that it is a great boon, incalculable in terms of money, to the whole community." Really very little has changed over the years as that would still be appropriate, even more so, today. |
